Fuser added a comment - 26/Jun/12 4:49 AM The scope is not very different from some other things in freeswitch that got added as modules. Its a really important feature now in PBXes or servers I think in view of mobile phones increasing being the clients and battery power being important. Few points (some obvious) - Module checks for an event - Sends push notification to the phone with selected information regarding the event - If event it is an incoming call, and the corresponding user is not registered, instead of sending to voicemail, it would send the push notification that there is an incoming call, time out and then send to voicemail. - App acts based on the push notification, and takes incoming call for example. I wish there were some open standards of notifications, probably its pretty "standard" already there but depending on and specific to the OS of the phone.

So from a server point of view I can't see how this would be possible to implement. This is something that is more interesting for a softphone developer, than in it for a switch developer. I believe there are already softphones out there that will handle this. /Peter

True for softphone but it is of interest to switch developer. Softphone alone can't do it, the push notification has to be generated by the switch. THIS IS SOOOO MUCH WITHIN SCOPE OF FS. Isn't it job of server to send the push notification ? If you take email servers, there are "modules" that support push notification. I think this is a useful and differentiating feature for FS. And extremely applicable in current world of voip clients on mobile phones.

Peter Olsson added a comment - 05/Jul/12 1:14 AM The app I was talking about will work with FS, it doesn't require anything from FS, since the actual server generating the push data is something the the app developer handles. As long as FS doesn't have it's own softphone for iOS, there is nowhere to implement this, since it's ties to the actual application id of the app.

Surang added a comment - 05/Jul/12 4:57 AM You are right in that the app developer (softphone) handles the push data. The app you pointed is the only one that has this support. And their solution will not work, reason being all the credentials of the account are stored on their servers, and SIP traffic goes through their servers. The reason they did this with huge overhead is because there is no solution out there. For companies or people wanting to deploy their own push server (they call the whole thing SIPIS), they charge 4-5 figures. Which basically points to major drawback with today's switches / pbxes / sip servers. As for the "dependency" on softphone etc. that only comes because there is no proper standard for push notifications today. If there were, everyone would follow it. VOIP and SIP didn't envision need for push notifications or battery life of mobiles. Future lies in mobiles and this is a terribly important feature. Following what they (Acrobits) are doing is a way to implement this in absence of a standard. I think the Freeswitch team with gurus like yourself, Anthony, Brian etc. may perhaps even take an interest in pushing standardization of push notifications with VOIP. Another option is to take Acrobits solution and add to freeswitch via some partnership/license/have them change it to make it suitable for using with FS and announce and publicize their app called groundwire. They may be interested given potential publicity and increased usage of their softphone. They allow using their push servers/SIPIS for free. Their problem is that they have to save the credentials leading to poor adoption. As for application id of the app, you are right, but just like for each user/extension there's an xml file, the FS admin will add details specific to the softphone/client that will be used to send the notification. There is a need also for using a certificate before the iphone push notification works. But that's the FS admin's burden, as long as FS takes and uses certificate put in some directory to send the push notification. These are specific details.

Surang added a comment - 09/Jul/12 4:04 AM I can write up the documentation to good extent of the architecture. I think you are missing the point though. Yes, it does add a feature that I want. But this is a huge area and a major advancement of VOIP and freeswitch itself. You would appreciate it if you can spare some time to read what I had written. I think it this is going to be part of many important sip clients (groundwire that was pointed earlier) which is the best selling sip app for iphone. And in heated discussion for csipsimple (best client for android). And of course provisions for such thing from both iphone (APNS, etc) and android (GCM).
